A Plymouth teapot and cover, circa 1768-70, of globular shape, richly decorated in bright Japan colours with the 'Dragons in Compartments' pattern, with four alternating arched panels of exotic beasts and vases of flowers, within a border of cell panels and flowerheads, the domed cover with a pointed finial

White, Mary, Drinking at the Whites' House, Vol. 2, 2021, p. 328, fig. d. William Cookworthy advertised in the local Worcester newspapers for painters skilled in the use of enamel or blue to join him at the Plymouth factory and the decoration is almost certainly the work of a former Worcester painter, although this celebrated pattern ultimately derives from Chinese famille verte. A similar example was sold by Bonhams on 13 September 2006, lot 160. Mary White notes how only teapots and mugs were produced in this pattern at Plymouth
