A rare Bristol tea saucer from the William Cowles Service, finely painted in coloured enamels with a bold spray of flowers and leaves, and scattered flowers, and with conjoined initials in gilt ‘WC’, within a laurel roundel, gilt dentil rims, circa 1774, no mark. From the service ordered by William Cowles of 33 Castle Green, Bristol, who was a Quaker and a friend of both Champion and Harford. The majority of this service is in the Lady Charlotte Schreiber Collection, in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Bristol armorial jug finely painted with the arms of Pye of Faringdon, a shaped shield of Ermine a bend indented gules within a puce rococo border, the crest a cross crosslet between wings, flanked by flower sprays, the grooved handle with elaborate gilt borders. The two most likely members of the Pye family for whom this jug might have been made are Admiral Sir Thomas Pye (c.1708/9-1785) who served during the American Wars of Independence; and Henry James Pye (1745-1813), MP for Berkshire and Poet Laureate from 1790.
